Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a Hong Kong-based multinational hospitality company founded by Robert Kuok Hock Nien, a Malaysian Chinese business magnate and investor.
According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated at $12.5 billion on March 2013, he has long been Malaysia’s richest person.
His Kuok Group controls an empire that includes the high-end hotel chain Shangri-La, Kerry Properties and commodities trader Wilmar.
He started trading rice, sugar and wheat flour in Malaysia in 1949 and in Singapore in 1953.
A big source of his wealth is a stake in palm-oil-giant Wilmar International, which is run by nephew Kuok Khoon Hong, a Singapore billionaire.
On 23 April 1971, he built the first Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore and the Tower Wing is the main wing of the hotel.
Robert Kuok named it Shangri-La, after the fictional utopia in which inhabitants enjoy unheard-of longevity.
The Garden Wing was opened in 1978 and in 1985, the Valley Wing was opened as the exclusive wing of the hotel for the high-end luxury travelers.
The Garden Wing has a15 acres of lush landscaped gardens.
The Garden Wing underwent an extensive SGD 68-million renovation to create 158 guestrooms and suites.
We stayed in the Deluxe Pool View Room, not a suite, yet.
Our room has a private bougainvillea-laden balcony with two arm chairs and a coffee table overlooking Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore’s swimming pool.
